These guidelines will apply to all awards for buildings:

  • Building should be at least 50 years old.
  • Building exterior only will be judged.
  • Only structures with original exterior type can be considered. Structures with vinyl, metal, concrete or asbestos siding covering any part of the original exterior cannot be considered.
  • Wood windows must remain intact. Added storm windows are acceptable. Any shutters must have been part of the original structure design.
  • The building and grounds should be presently in good condition, not in need of paint or repairs. Grounds landscaped with artificial plants are not eligible.

Authentic Restoration

  • No major alterations to the building can have been made, i.e. removal of major architectural elements from the original structure.
  • No major additions have been made to the structure.
  • The structure should have been restored as closely as possible to the appearance it had at some previous point in time. This implies an active effort to reproduce architectural features that have been removed.

Preservation - One Story and Multi-Story
  • The structure is sound and usable and well maintained. No attempt to restore to a particular period in time is required.

 Adaptive Reuse
  • The building is being used for something other than the original intent of the builder.
  • This can involve a sensitive rehabilitation that retains much of a building's original character, or it can involve extensive remolding.
Merit Award
  • Building can be a house, business or out building.
  • The structure is deserving of recognition for work done in the fields of renovation, rehabilitation or restoration that has not been recognized in one of the previous categories.

The Sherman Preservation League may withdraw an award from a building that undergoes any significant changes that would have made it ineligible for recognition when the award was given.

Individual
  • Recognition to a person who has made a significant contribution to the history of the region, the field of historic preservation or restoration.
  • Recognition can be for the past year or a significant period of time.
